2006 - Katrina is the first of a series of massive hurricanes that happen every few years. After many of these, the water does not fully retreat.
2017 - PROTECT Act passes Congress - outsourcing America's homeland security databases to a Chinese computer company.
2018 - The Franco-Rwandan war erupts over French water interests in Africa. After three years of fighting a cease fire is signed, but several major points of contention remain unresolved. Tensions continue unabated, with occasional conflicts resparking for years.
2019 - After years of continuous inflation, the American dollar crashes, causing a period frequently referred to as the Second Great Depression. Many of the environmental protections and promising movements faltered in the wake of the economic collapse. The restoration of prosperity was deemed more important than anything else.
2022 - The Sudanese-Egyptian Republic and the African Union go to war over water sources and several small border regions containing fertile land. The fighting is long and bloody, but eventually the African Union claims most of the disputed area.
2025 - After a massive hurricane floods Louisiana and Florida, New Orleans is the first American city abandoned to the sea.
2029 - Boston and San Francisco begin losing ground to the ocean.
2030 - Fishing and aquaculture in the Gulf of Mexico becomes unsafe due to nearly continuous red tides.
2031 - Cane toads are first spotted in California and rapidly spread throughout the Southern US, outcompeting local amphibians, poisoning local birds, and inconveniencing many people by their sheer numbers.
2032 - The US is invaded by a South American species of louse that is very difficult to exterminate, causing the closing of summer camps, daycares and even schools in a desperate attempt to isolate the affected individuals.
2033 - Due to warm winters and long summers, mouse populations explode in the American bread basket. Thousands of tons of grain are eaten and mouse borne diseases spread throughout the population. Wheat laced with poisons is used to kill the mice. While this succeeds, many birds, cats and dogs are also killed from eating either the wheat or the poisoned mice.
2034 - The tick-borne tropical cattle disease theileriosis arrives in the US. It quickly spreads throughout herds in much of the South. In some states, nearly 20% of cattle are estimated to have been lost.
2035 - Buruli ulcer, a painless but disfiguring skin ulcer begins spreading through the US. It appears to be caused by a bacterium that has been spreading with an invasive water plant found in many lakes that contain swimming areas. All swimming areas in these lakes are closed, but new populations continue to pop up.
2036 - A particularly bad year of hurricanes destroys Miami and several towns in Southern Florida and ravages Cuba and Puerto Rico.
2037 - Pesticide resistant mormon crickets sweep through the American breadbasket, destroying most of this year's harvest before being wiped out by a new pesticide called FRO.
2037 - Increasing population and weakening infrastructure causes rolling blackouts throughout much of the United States.
2038 - A massive tidal wave sweeps into India, killing thousands of people.
2039 - Chevron fails to cover up a massive oil spill after two tankers crash in the Arctic.
2039 - Thousands of children born to parents exposed to FRO suffer from deformations and cognitive defects, many of which are fatal.
